Procurement and Technology Transfer of Florida Automated Transit Stop Inventory Model (ATSIM)
Transit stop inventories are needed to track the conditions of amenities, determine how well areas of interest are served by transit service, assess the accessibility for disabled persons and ADA compliance, support Advanced Public Transportation Systems (APTS) applications, etc. However, many transit agencies in Florida still do not have a transit stop inventory that can adequately support such applications, and some do not have an inventory at all. Florida International University, in cooperation with the University of South Florida, has identified a standard set of transit stop attributes for Florida’s fixed-route transit systems. Standardization of transit stop inventories allows FDOT to develop applications and tools that can be used by all agencies. To support the collection of the standard inventory and avoid duplication of effort by transit agencies, an automated field collection system called the Florida Automated Transit Stop Inventory Model (ATSIM) has been developed to collect the standard attributes. The system runs an ArcPad GIS application on a PDA that is wirelessly connected to a GPS receiver. The system also includes a digital camera as an option for agencies that desire to take photos of their transit stops. In addition, to support data retrieval and analysis of the standard inventory, customized queries were developed in the Florida Transit Geographic Information System (FTGIS).
To achieve the goals set out for ATSIM, FDOT has identified the following three tasks to facilitate and encourage deployment of the system by transit agencies:
- To procure the software and hardware components of the system for distribution to transit agencies.
- To setup the ArcPad application such that the system will be ready to use by transit agencies.
- To hold workshops at District Offices to distribute and demonstrate the use of the system.
